Wreck Fishing trip
Tuesday February 6th 2007 was the day that Lady Godiva
played host to the Sky Sports Crew,
The weather forecast was for light Northerly winds and bright sunshine,
combined with a big tide what more could we ask for!
We had decided to do a wreck fishing trip for the Big Fat Winter Pollack out
on the mid channel wrecks and the crew for the day representing 'Sky Sports
Tight Lines' was presenter Keith Arthur, Anna Woods and Nigel Botherway, We also
had two guests along as winners of the Tight Lines phone in competition, Kevin
Thorpe and his brother from Essex,
At this time of year the Pollack are to be found South West of Weymouth at a
range of about 35 miles or so, as the spring approaches they move further east
and by mid summer are to be found on almost all the mid channel wrecks both east
and west of Weymouth,
So with a steam of about 2 hours the crew had plenty of time to prepare the
Fox Sea rods and reels with a variety of lures, shads and jelly worms,
On arrival at our chosen wreck I was dismayed to find that the wreck netters
had got the same idea and had set a net just east of the wreck,
After pinging the wreck with the sonar for a few minutes I decided that we
could still fish the northern section of the wreck without snagging up on the
net,
The first drift saw one of the Essex lads into a very big Pollack that
eventually proved too much for the 20lb mono trace and so it was Fish 1, Anglers
Nil,
Up for the second drift and with a re-adjusted reel drag our Essex lad was
again into a good fish, this time after several searing runs the Pollack gave up
the fight and a fine 14lb fish was in the net, Score - Fish 1, Anglers 1,
The tide was easing rapidly now and bites were getting few and far between so
I decided that a change was as good as a rest and moved us a short distance to a
new wreck,
First drift and Bingo! all rods are bent into good fish with the best falling
to Sky Sports Star Anna Woods with another Pollack of around 14-15lbs
Sadly the tide died away completely and as usual the Pouting came out to
play, now as a charter boat skipper I am never happy to see Pouting coming to
the net but these guys were just as happy catching Pouting as they were Big
Pollack, especially Anna ,
Keith Arthur is a real Anglers Angler if you know what I mean, he is so
enthusiastic about his fishing that he is infectious, He just never stops
talking about angling and he kept me entertained during the long steam out and
back with his tales about fishing for big game fish around the world,
He, like me, prefers to fish as light as possible and it was no surprise to
me when he picked up the Fox Challenger 6lb class rod to tackle the big Pollack,
he had some real fun putting a bend in that rod,
All too soon it was time to head for home and during the 2 hours steam back to
Weymouth we decided that we would definitely have to come back another day for
another session with the Big Pollack on the Mid Channel Wrecks, Who knows we
might even bump into a Big Fat Cod as well!!
